September 11th - Sydney $10k tournament information:

Initial information suggests we will be getting a variety of Australians and even some New Zealanders taking part in the first $10,000US tournament to be held outside of the United States.

With the advent of the 1 game match, there will definitely be some interested eyes and ears around the globe, guaging the popularity and feasiblity of this new system. Estimates are 9 or 10 rounds, using the Swiss +3 rule.

We'll be attempting to get as much live information as possible to the forums here throughout the day. The tournament starts at 10AM Sydney time, which translated to 5PM Pacific and 8PM Eastern time in the US.

Immediately following the event tomorrow night, we'll have a proper coverage page up and going - we could do it sooner, but the choice is to play or to do live coverage... and of course we're going to play!

Special thanks to TheCrimsonScribe, who'll be our man behind the keyboard for the updates.
ssteven
Coverage of the event will start in approxamitely 10 hours!

Word is we're going to see at least:

3 New Zealanders
1 Western Australian
6 South Australians
5-10 Victorians
2-5 Queenslanders
and an estimated 30-40 Sydneysiders

Pre-tourney whispers seem to show a popularity with Teen Titans (a VARIETY of builds) and Common Enemy. Sydney has been a Big Brotherhood dominated scene, even later in the Metagame, so it will be interesting to see which decks preform well tomorrow, and to see if the 1 game/match will impact peoples deck choice and/or play style.

Stay tuned!

I've posted on the VSRealms forums to allude people to the fact that we're having some coverage here on VSP - hopefully that's ok by them - the link to that forum is HERE

Sydney $10,000 Vs System Event Coverage

While not "live" the aim of this coverage is to give those Australians and any international visitors that couldn't make it to the event itself some idea of what is going on, but more importantly I'm going to be tracking the progress of my fellow forum members.

Blow by blow feature match coverage as well as interviews and deck lists should be appearing on Metagame through out the day (or night due to time zone differences). I'll provide a link as soon as I find it.

Well it's 9:55am in Sydney at the moment, so that should mean that event registration has just closed, which means the first round should be underway in the next 30 minutes or so.

A total of 82 players have turned up to duke it out for the $10,000US on offer today, eclipsing even UDE's own estimations which only goes to show how popular this game really is.

Keep checking through out the day to see how everyone is doing.
Hayden
Go people!

Im guessing Common Enemy will win. I think that Brave and Bold and TNB have a chance
TheCrimsonScribe
Round 1
Round 1 is underway and the metagame appears to have a heavy influence from PC:GenCon with Common Enemy popping up everywhere. Also featuring heavily are Big Brother, and those tricky kids the Teen Titans.

Round 2

After round 2, the following decks are sitting at the top of the standings:

4 x Common Enemy
3 x Teen Titans
2 x The NewBrotherhood
2 x Wild Vomit
1 x Big Brother
1 x FF Burn

I've been "promised" a complete set of the standings after round 3, so expect some more detailed information in about 45 minutes.
TheCrimsonScribe
Round 4

We appear to have skipped a round along the way - which kind of explains why this is so much later than my prediction. It appears no one is undefeated at this point and either I don't have the complete standings, or close to 30 people have dropped from the tournament - personally, I'm hoping it's the former.

I've put a person's forum nick beside their name where I know it, if you know someone I've missed please let me know.

Round 5

Just a minor update at the moment (and a slight correction) - there are apparently a couple of deck that are still undefeated, namely Common Enemy & FF Burn. There is also an epic struggle between Teen the Titans and the Gotham Knights to join this elite club.
TheCrimsonScribe
Round 7

Latest News!

15 of the top 16 (well the top 8 tables at least) are Sydney players, with the lone outsider unconfirmed as Ben Kreis (Brisbane's own Kingpin). There appears to be 1 undefeated deck left, though I can't seem to find out exactly what it is or who is piloting it.

Dan Gow (Hernando) is currently sitting at a very comfortable 6-1 with a Gotham Knights deck that splashes for (of all things) Magneto! Scott Hunstad (ssteven) is sitting on 5-2.

The Teen Titans are finding the extra rounds tough as they are getting beaten upside the head by Dr Doom and his Fantastic Four buddies in Common Enemy and their supoosed friends in the Gotham Knights.

Any more updates?

Those forum members that didn't make the final rounds may be providing some more complete coverage in the way of feature matches and interviews, possibly even decklists.

Hopefully before the end of the night I'll get to give at least one more update with the results of the final matches.
Hayden
Is there metagame.com coverage?
TheCrimsonScribe
Apparently not.

Or from what I've been told TBS hasn't sent them anything to post yet, so if there is anything, it may be delayed like the Dragon*Con coverage from earlier this week.
Hayden
Well I am assuming so because some of my SA friends were feature matched.
AanAllein
A lot of the $10K coverage has been a little delayed - well, some of it, anyway. I would not at all be surprised to see us waiting a couple of days for it to go up on metagame.
LILchris
are the top 8ers playing or was it just swiss?
TheCrimsonScribe
The Top8 should be under way right now.

And the Top8 is run as best of 3.
TheCrimsonScribe
Just added the rest of the final standings (after swiss). There's a few anomalies on there from what I can tell.

Anyone know how the tie breakers work? Just looking at them here (not posted) but some of them (the 3rd to be specific) go above 300?
Sam K
I guess I better let you guys have some rough info.

The top 8 was made up of 7 Sydney siders. The decks as far as I am aware are:

FF Burn
Teen Titans (The Alx Brown Mix)
Common Enemy x3
Gothem Knights (AKA DG Special)
THe LIKEable Brotherhood

The is bascly all I can remmebr of the top of my head. I am sure Paul/Scott H will fill you guys in on lots of details in the next day or so.

Sam K

PS The WOB product did not come in so no prerealese.

TheCrimsonScribe
Sam,

I've got the complete standings as of Round 10 on the first page, complete with deck archetypes for the T8.

A public congratulations on 19th place.
Sam K
Thanks TCS. It was very close as I lost my 10 round in 30 second. My first drop for the game was Mageto, that was the last turn as I was burned by FF they comic raditioned twice. All fun and games biggrin.gif

Sam K
TheCrimsonScribe
I hope you mean that MAgento (5) was your first drop and not (7) - bad luck on that btw.
Sam K
It was the 5 drop. That is one of the problems of having the one game format. If you get a bad draw your round is over.

Flawless Victory
Will the play by play for the finals be posted here or will we have to wait for meta's coverage? I am interested to see how with 4 roys, 4 terras, and 4 finishing moves the Teen Titans lost to a F5/Gotham deck. Shimmer should have been so owned.
ssteven
It certainly will. If all goes well, within the next few hours!
Brotherhood
I am not surprised that Ben's deck won.

I played him during the second round and his deck virtually crushed my Big Brotherhood and I only lost to 3 people in the whole tournment (2 being in the top 8).

Shimmer and Doc Light were awesome and him fizzling any plot twist that could hurt him, i.e. Flame trap and "Have a Blasts" slaughtered most decks.

Well done!!!
Sam K
Personal I think the deck is good against a agro meta. I dont think the deck can compete with Doom, FF Burn or any deck with control elements. Having said that it was a good deck choice in Sydney as the only control we have is CE.

From the game 1 in the Dan Gow Vs Ben Kreis semi final:

QUOTE
Ben Turn 6: Dr Light attacks Batman, Dan uses Nasty Surprise, Ben exhausts Oracle with Shimmer and plays Marvel Team up then Press the Attack to ready Dr Light. Ben proceeds to use Dr Lights ability to stun Batman, Dan plays have a blast targeting Marvel Team up, in response Ben plays Worlds Finest. Dan plays have a blast targeting Worlds Finest, Ben plays fizzle, Dan plays have a blast from hand targeting Worlds Finest, in response Ben plays Press the Attack to ready Dr light and stunning Batman, Dan plays flame trap with Ben responding with fizzle. Dan in turn plays fizzle with Ben playing another fizzle. Dan plays fizzle with Ben using Alfred to search for another fizzle and plays it. Bens fizzle resolves and Dan Gow scoops with Ben stating ?Counter spells have come to VS.?

Who still thinks Vs is less complicated than Magic?

i typed up ALL the decklists on site; vanwolfgang has them on his computer and they'll go up at metagame once TBS uploads it all so wicketty check it out

excuse all my spelling mistakes though; i don't know the game well enough and people who plays ccgs have the worst handwriting except for doctors
Uly
Ben played extremely well and had perfect knowledge of what his deck had to do to win in each matchup. I know i was exhausted over thirteen hours but i can only imagine what playing Ben's deck does to your brain. Its creative, yet extremely tight, design, combined with the skills of its pilot, gave the inaugural Australian 10K a most deserving champion!

Complete player decklist now added!

Huge congrat's to Alex and Ben on the Final. I stayed to watch till the end and it was awesome. The level of play, thought, and descision making that went into both decks left me with a sore head, so I hate to think about how they both felt. One got an idea when after both players had been staring at the board for around 5 minutes, one of them looked up and went "sorry, is it my go?"

Well done guys.

The event was awesome.

I hope that everyone had a good time, I certainly did - it was great to see people from every corner turn up for this.

Thank you for making that event great! A special thanks to vsparadise staff who did a great job on coverage.

Take care

Ike E Bear
Amazing deck to take it out.
No one would have expected that to take out the event ... except, I dare say, it's owner.
A thorough congratulations is in order.
It was an amazing day and thank you to everyone involved in making it happening.
Congratulations also to Vs Paradise on this awesome coverage ... even if I was there to see it first hand anyway.
