So who do you think will be in the Top 8? It may be a bit premature as unlike the MTG nationals, we don't all know who is going, but as a matter of interest - who will be up there? Will Sydney dominate or get chucked on their backside? Will the New Zealand contingent blaze through the event? Let us know your thoughts!

Here's my picks, in no particular order
Scott Smith
Alex Brown
Ray Isais
Andy Young
Guy from Adelaide
Guy from Melbourne
Guy from New Zealand (I mean they have to think they're good enough if they're making the trip right?)
Me!
I'm tempted to pick an all Sydney Top 8 but I wouldn't want to assume...

So how do we go about nominating exactly which "Guy from X" is the one you meant?

Aug 31 2004, 01:05 PM
Good question - it's just a general impression, given that I don't really know WHO is coming up/across from those places.. I'll try to update the list a bit closer to the day

Hmm, as I only know Sydney-siders mine would look a bit like this in no
particular order.
1. Luke Bartter
2. Scott Smith
3. David Xu
4. Egg
5. Scott H
6. Kieren Otto
7. Tim He
8. Jackie Zhang (Junior, or as I prefer Fledgling)
and I'll come 9th

So yall assuming we can actually play this game, right?
Better build a deck and start testing

Aug 31 2004, 01:59 PM
who's david Xu
that would be the answer if this was jeopardy and the question was "Who did everyone leave out of their top 8?"

edit: holycow is another definite candidate, seriously guys no disrespect but JNR can barely play limited (yeah i know he won the pcq). this is a whole new arena for him and Tim He. Even though one is a national champ and the other is a state champ in magic, I doubt they've done the playtesting to do top 8 in a major event.
is this a competition? if so what do you win? how much? and can anyone enter?
here's my picks in no particular order.
Scott S (Cool Zero)
Luke B (Like)
David Xu (?)
Tyng Y (holycow)
Me (Ray WOWsais)
Andy Young (?)
Egidio Degois (EggNet)
Tony "Biggles Middle Man" Chung (ynot85)
yeah, i know they're all from Sydney but i don't know how good the other ppl are yet

Ugh... I can't play constructed for peanuts (self edited)
1. Luke Bartter
2. Ray I
3. David X
4. Scott S (why not...)
5. Egidio DeGois
6. Alex Brown
7. Random
8. Random
I'm sure there will be two people I don't know in the top8. That said I can't believe how many lists don't include Luke. I know he's my hero and all that, but I haven't seen anyone play test as much as he does. Definatly top8 along with Ray I who from day 1 has played the same deck and knows all the ins and outs.

I've been bashing up Luke of late so I left him off my list (lol) - however last night he veritably caned me so I may have to reconsider
OK
I am predicting a major Sydney Offensive (as said before, all puns intentional and now trademarked). Mainly because any reason i think of that can justify who is in my top 8 comes down to ppl i play with, factors like home advantage and rules knowledge, and national noteriety (i.e they post on Vs Parardise or in some very odd and rare cases are an interesting TCG personality). Here is my list, as close to an order as possible. I think there will be ppl from other states who do well, i just don't know them very well yet so i can't comment.
Scott Smith- he says he isnt good at Constructed. Compared to what? Scott has an imposing presence and manner that is invaluable for troubling lower-level opposition at high-level tournaments. Additionally, unlike in MTG, where Scott would be the first to admit the pressure got to him a few times, Scott is undisputedly the King of the castle in Vs ATM, and will not be sitting down across from a player he would think is better than him. Combined with the fact that he can play and will have tested, it is hard to not expect top eight.
Ray Isais-Ray has dominated constructed tournaments for too long not to do well here. Has played BBH for a long time and is unlikely to go against the grain with a deck that has less pedigree. Experience is huge at these tournaments and Ray has it in spades.
Tyng- If he plays anything remotely well-tuned, will inevitably do well. The best poker face and wardrobe in the business combined with strong play skills should be too much. Plays a lot of constructed with a lot of different decks and does very well, but often falls slightly short of the big time. Tyng will no doubt pack a few surprises, making him very dangerous against the more established players, who will be used to certain decks doing certain things.
David Xu-runs hot and cold. Could be the best player on any given day or could scrub out if not in the mood. Also renowned for perhaps eccentric decks, Dave is my pick because he often brings the big game to the big game.
Chris Young-Very good Sydney Player who has been playing TT since the start, and along with brother Andy, are my picks for the most underrated players in Sydney. Extremely tight player who will play what is a very difficult deck extremely efficiently.
Daniel (x?)- Cant spell his last name but is friends with the 2XTwins (anyone know that book series the Bobbsey twins?). The best young player by far. May struggle to get the cards he needs or just might not bring a good enough deck. Still, his skills are tight and if things click he could go far at the 10K
Psyclic- If he's coming, Psyclic gets one of my outta town nods. I have no idea if he can play, but he seems to have the cards and posts strong decklists and advice on the Forums.
I think the other slot may come from out of town too, bit i have no idea who. The tournament structure can be very demanding and many of the more established names will likely face each other early on.

After much observing of a variety of decktypes and playskills in the Sydney area, plus extensive research on this and other sites, I've determined the top 8 players at the 10K event will be:
Tyng-he's played Arkham at a PCQ
Ike E Bear-Has written about Arkham
Matt-gave good feedback on the Arkham deck thread
David Xu-Asked to borrow my Arkham deck at last weekends PCQ
Scott Smith-has given me foiled Arkham cards to help foil my Arkham deck
Luke Bartter-Made an Arkham deck, and even though it sucked he still gave it a go.
Paul"I've got a lovely bunch of Coconuts" Van Derwerk-ratcatcher is his favourite character
Alex Brown-Alerted me to several Arkham articles around the web

people have too much faith in my constructed play (I wanna say skillz but no..not that)... just play will do. sigh, i just envision all constructed tournaments starting with me playing against dude with net deck and me losing infi cause he's running the net deck... or me running he net deck and running into see of hate with many bad draws. i just can't envision a win (even though I have myself on my own list). Then again, if someone asked me if i thought egg would top8 without a spiderman deck then i wouldve told them to go to hell so i guess anything is possible!
Fappo!

Anyway, I think Adelaide could place a few people in the top 8. I think Jarrod could do well, and Luke has experience.
As for myself.... Well I wouldn't be going if I didn't think I had a very good chance at top 4. You might be one to call me arrogant for making such a statement, but I believe in the saying "It's confidence, not cockyness."

Since I don't know the scene, I just want to second honest's predictions ... look right to me.
I think the Sydney guys do have a serious competitive advantage in the fact that the game seems to be most active there and many of them therefore have more tournament experience.
Plus lots of drafting = better skillz, in my general opinion.
Cool Zero
Sep 10 2004, 12:11 PM
we are a drafting community for sure, but that doesnt make us good Constructed players...
what makes us good constructed players are the hours put in testing each match-up methodically with every deck in the meta
and you guys are crazy if you dont have Like in your top8... but then again I think your all crazy for having me there ugh
