if you have a stunned guy and they try to use hounds to Ko, you can respond by recovering your guy (COTA or whatever) to negate it, but in this case hounds doesnt exhaust right? so if they tried to use hounds you could recover on the chain but they could finishing move with hounds back on the chain? because you cant wait for hounds to exhaust to chain or its too late. urr lemme know if that was confusing.

Hounds of Ahab's effect only triggeers when Hounds attacks a player directly. The attack has to be legal, where Hounds is exhuasted for the attack.
If you can recover your stunned character (via CotA for example), Hounds effect will be negated when it resolves. The character will not be KO'd, and Hounds is able to cause breakthrough for this attack.
If your opponent plays Finishing Move 'in response' to your CotA, he will need to exhuast a ready character. The attacking Hounds is already exhuasted, so he will not be able to exhuast that character for Finishing Move. He will need to exhuast another character that is ready; if he does not have one, he cannot play Finishing Move.

Woah slowmail, I'm not so sure about the hounds ability being negated.
AFAIK, the hound's ability is a replacement effect, and by the time it triggers, it is too late to respond.
I think MPM or TDA should answer that one.

Hounds of Ahab, Army Character, Sentinel, 2 2/2 Concealed. (This character comes into play in the hidden area.) Whenever Hounds of Ahab attacks a player directly, you may KO target stunned character. If you do, Hounds of Ahab cannot cause breakthrough this turn. |
Replacement modifiers use the word "instead"; which Hounds does not. Hounds has a triggered effect. When Hounds attacks a player directly and Hounds is exhuasted for the attack, a triggered effect is placed on the chain and the player controlling Hounds receives priority.
Hounds effect is negated at resolution if the character is recovered, because Hounds targets a stunned character. When all targets are illegal on resolution, the effect is negated.
| QUOTE |
513.5a Modifiers that use "instead" are replacement modifiers. A replacement modifier replaces an event with another event. The replaced event never happens; any powers or modifiers that would have triggered off of the replaced event will not trigger. A replacement modifier may replace an event any time, even during the resolution of an effect.
508.2a If the effect specifies targets, check the legality of targets. If all targets are illegal, negate the effect. (See rule 509.) Otherwise, resolve the effect. |

Agreed.
Randall am n00b. It rechecks for a legal target on resolution.
