Rally Against Defeat: The Unofficial Philly 10k Report
by Ean Press

A friend woke me up at 6:30 in the morning to get up and get on the bus, then the train for the 10k. This entire year I have been waiting for this event and now it was finally here. First we went up to our card shop for playtesting, which seemed like days to accomplish. Being up early, I turned forgetful about all the stuff I wanted to bring, camera, drinks, money, you know, superficial stuff.

We got there early as anything, but bleary-eyed and disoriented we walked into Wizard World, with our heads held high. We ended up waiting in the line for a good hour only to figure out it was the wrong line so we had to get in another line to pay and receive badges. Finally, we got into the 10k and started filling out the decklist sheet and showed the ude number, you know the usual stuff. Then we started to trade and do more playtesting before the actual thing started.

Alex Shvartsman made his announcements and we began round one with the New Gods Deck. Apparently, I ended up being the only one there with a straight New Gods deck, and the only other two were teamed-up and definitely not as good, no offense or anything. I played Alex Diokmedjian, in the first round, he was using a Big Brotherhood deck that revolved around the
pump, Lost City combo, Prophecy Fulfilled tried to prevail and we all know what happened when Lightray and Moonrider burns and they still have 1 left, you receive a smack on the face.

Second round I played Jose Caraballo with his Spider-Evade deck. Turn 1, I play Soldiers of New Genesis and he passes and takes 2. Turn 2, I play Serifan, he passes and takes 4. Turn 3, I flip New Genesis, play Mark Moonrider, he plays Spider-man, The Friendly Neighborhood Spider-man, and passes. I hit him for 5 with Mark Moonrider's effect and team-attacked with my remaining characters, a la Blood Feud. Turn 4, I activate Mark Moonrider for another 5,
play another Mark Moonrider and another Soldiers of New Genesis, and flipped The Prophecy Fulfilled. He played Black Cat and declared an attack, Spiderman to Soldiers of New Genesis, I reinforced to take 0. He then attacked with Black Cat on the other Soldiers Of New Genesis, thanks to New Genesis, I recovered the one protecting it and returned his cosmic, thus I took
0 because of the reinforcement I gave him. Next, I activated Mark Moonrider again for another five and passed. At the start of the recovery I play Children of Forever, returning Soldiers Of New Genesis, to play, yet another Mark Moonrider, exhausted with cosmic. On the next turn I start with Metron, and the double activation of Mark Moonrider, putting him down to 17, to my fresh 50. He plays Spiderman, Alien Symbiote, and passes. I attack with Metron on his
Spiderman, with the help of Astro-Force, and reducing Jose's score to 12. He then attacks Soldiers of New Genesis with Black Cat, causing me to lose 5. Turn 6, he plays Iceman and passes to my double activation of Mark Moonrider and then another from my hand, making
him at -2. I had two cards in my hand so, with prophecy and New Genesis I was guaranteed the win.

Another thing also running rampant was the Dr. Light Combo deck, a.k.a. Idiocy from the Thirtieth Century or the new, New School, constructed and played by Stephen Silverman and friends. As I have posted on various web sites, I talked to Stephen Silverman before mostly every match, and talked about the new combo, and gave him his props. He also said he did not
want to play me whatsoever, because the New Gods, like Sourcing stuff, especially the team-ups that like to fuel Cosmic Radiations and such. He had his fun, but with the new errata coming into play for Rama-Tut, that 10k was the last of his fun with the brutal Dr. Light.dek.

I also gained very valuable learning experiences there. I have hardly ever played against a Curve Sentinel deck or for that matter another 10k to begin with, so I learned to hate Bastion. I played against a Brave and the Bold deck. I Sourced the Brave and the Bolds, but then he just went straight Titans and crushed me with the Teen Titans Go's! I played Against a Marvel Knights/ Crime Lords deck and destroyed him with 1-7 straight up the curve. I played X-Beats and
Sourced, Beatdown, thus giving the big middle finger to the deck. But with the evolving metagame and the incoming bans and errata's, I would have beaten the Curve Sentinel deck, and the Dr. Light Combo that I played against for fun.

To leave on a good note, though, I left the place with higher hopes for the future of my card playing career and a new and free Green Lantern shirt. Although the deck took a slight loss, I will continue trying to improve on the New Gods and here was the decklist I used.
