![]() Free Money – VS PCQ’s Michael Pittman wrote a pretty decent introductory article to VS here, but for those of you who have not yet picked up a pack of VS here are some reasons to do so. The DC Set is approaching quickly, and if you have yet to embark on this awesome new game then you’d better start now or regret it later. UDE are determined to give Wizards and their premier product Magic: The Gathering a run for their money, and boy are they doing it. I’ve only ever travelled once for a magic PTQ. It was last year to Canberra for a team PTQ with Andrew Corney and the now retired Mark Fabian. We lost in the top 4 and went home with nothing but a few packs. Last weekend I travelled all the way to Melbourne for a VS PCQ which I was already qualified for. You know why? Because its US$500 first prize money that’s why. Don’t sound like much? Well what if I told you the PTQ money for any magic event in Australia is just US$375… see what I’m getting at. The prize support for VS is pretty large compared to the competition, but that’s not even the best bit. What if I told you that in order to win a MTG PTQ you had to go through 50-60 people in no less than 7 rounds, and then play an additional 3 rounds for a chance at the money. Now you look at VS. it is a relatively new game and so you usually won’t get more than 30 people. Now look at the set up. You play 2 rounds of Sealed (4 packs of 14 cards each with which to build a 30 card deck), then you look to see if you can make the top 8, if you can’t, you drop and go into the constructed tournament which is like 4 rounds and then you play for top 8. Both top 8’s have a US$500 purse. That’s a thousand dollars in one day UDE have graciously put up for winning their tournaments. See why I’m playing VS more than Magic now (and that’s with nats only a couple of weeks away). Fear not all those who feel they have missed out on any money because in just a few short months Sydney will be hosting a $10,000 tournament. Then shortly after that there’s one in Melbourne, then Brisbane, then one in NZ. There will be 5 $10,000 tournaments held per year (I am unsure where the 5th will be held) and all are sponsored by UDE. There’s a lot of money being thrown around here and it’s a really fun game to play, both constructed and Sealed/draft. If you know how to play Magic, then you will pick up the game quite quickly. Look at my mate Ray for a moment. He picked up the game about a month ago. The first weekend he played we taught him some basics to sealed and he came 9th. There was time to go into the constructed event so I loaned him a deck… he ended up splitting in the finals. The next PCQ at Game Scape he split in the finals on the sealed portion. Last weekend in Melbourne he won more money splitting with myself and two other random Melbourne players (one was TBS). That’s 3 PCQs with money in all of them. That’s some good stuff if you know what I mean. So go out today. Buy a starter and learn how to play. If you come down to SGC and I’m there I’ll teach you how to play (I’m usually there Thursdays but might randomly be there on other days), or maybe one of the friendly staff will teach you. It really isn’t hard, and is awesome fun to play… you’ll like it even more if you love comics like I do =)
Peace NB: To differentiate between VS and Magic you’ll notice that VS has PCQ’s (pro circuit qualifiers) and Magic has PTQ’s (Pro Tour Qualifiers). Magic has the ‘stack’ while VS uses the ‘chain’ although both work similarly. In VS all creatures have ‘provoke’ (the attack chooses the defender), ‘trample’ (called spill over) and many other abilities in common with Magic. It’s an easy game to pick up, and free money is always cool!
NB2: Its call VS. Many people refer to the game as Marvel because that was the first expansion released, but future releases will include many DC characters also as well as other factions I might be un aware of at this time.
