“Versus System at home. The Real Story”

Wellington.

New Zealand.

A great place to live and shop, variable scenery, from industrial up to natural, you could say we have it all; we have beaches (don’t try surfing though, unless your competent with 10 cm waves) we have factories, we have parks, motels, hotels, Spas, Golf courses. What Wellington has is amazing.

But that’s not what I am here to write about...

Wellington Vs has been struggling since its release. With a tight group of about 4-8 members for the first 3 or 4 months we were hard pressed to find cards (our local retailer wasn’t willing to support us) so it came down to Auckland retailers and international sellers.

I have been in the game since April, straight after Yu-gi-oh Nationals I was looking for something new, a friend of mine, Poe, found a game that Rob Rangi (The Legend) had been raving about: The all new Versus System. Such was I that within the week I had a box of Marvel Origins and 2 starter decks. Pulls I had crap, but it was enough to start the deck that dominated Wellington until August: Mutant Nation.

The idea was that Rogue Power Absorption copied Quicksilver’s effect to basically have two 4 Drops and two 5 Drops. The deck also ran Longshot to pull out many copies of Rogue, Quicksilver and Wolverine, with the help of Lost City and Avalon; the deck was unstoppable unless I missed both Rogue and Quicksilver.

It was also this time that I was rated 2nd in Oceania and the time I was offered a trip to Sydney 10k (You boys were lucky). After the 10k, awareness was out that the game was big worldwide. Vs got a small following, and by the time Armageddon rolled around we had a total count of 20 or so.

Armageddon was September and us originals knew we had to get more players. The Superman Pre Release was a big hit, as that morning NO product turned up. 15 players each with 35 dollars. Players had printed up lists to draft and I had been researching for the week. Then came the smashing conclusion. There was no Superman to play with! This news hit us like a Gamma Bomb. No product, no draft. Such is the way of our business. But Wellington is not without their legends, and Rob pulled his product for the PCQ to play this tournament! This would mean that WoS would be sealed, with Superman prizes.

The players played well, as this was our first Sealed event…Ever. Such is the way of our players that Sealed never came into the game. To date only 4 or 5 Sealed/Draft events have been run. But this is to change. Since the beginning of the game Booster boxes have been 190 dollars from our local. 190 dollars. This would mean charging 25 dollars a person. For 3 boosters a piece it just didn’t work out. Without a large player base Chris Z didn’t send us any prize support so we continued to play constructed.

This will be changing now. With over 30 local Vs players, and more arriving every weekend, you can bet that when a Wellington 10k comes around, we will be ready to annihilate any opposition. For now though, we rest. Auckland 10k is a few months away and as I know from experience and reading, I need to start saving hours! You can bet the strongest from Wellington will represent there and if you are not ready for us…well then why are you coming over?

See you on the battlefield!

Shaun
